Biographical History
The Lyceum of Natural History was organized by a group of Williams College students, with the aid of Prof. Albert Hopkins, in 1835. The society's stated purpose was "the study of the natural sciences." Members of the society were responsible for delivering research papers, and collecting and cataloging scientific specimens. From 1835 to 1871, the Lyceum sponsored a number of expeditions, to aid in the collection of samples, to such locales as Greenland, Newfoundland, Florida, and South America. By 1909 meetings of the society were sporadic; the society's botanical section apparently continued to meet until approximately 1914.
