Biographical History

Courses in military study began with the college in 1891. By 1893, military courses were required of all students, male and female. The Military Department formed in 1914 only to be replaced the following year by the Department of Military Science and Tactics. In 1938 the name changed again to Military Department. In 1948 the Department of Military Science was established only to be renamed the following year Department of Military and Air Science. The name changed again to Department of Defense as part of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1950 only to change again in 1975 to Department of Military Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1965 ROTC courses at OSU ceased to be mandatory and in 1973 the first women were accepted with the capacity to achieve commissions.
