Biographical History
Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island is located on the east or northeast shore of Narragansett Bay. It was transferred from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 1746 and incorporated in 1747.
Asa Messer Gammell (1816-1903), a teacher; R. B. Johnson ( - ); Isaac Foote Cady (1818-1884), a high school principal; and Charles Thompson Child ( - ) consented, on 16 March 1857, to act as a Bible Committee for the town of Warren, R.I. The purpose of the committee was "... to circulate the Holy Scripture without note or comment." The committee contracted with William Guild ( - ), agent for the American Bible Society, to keep "... in deposit such a variety of the issues of the American Bible Society as will meet the demands of th[e] town, and make an effort from time to time, to search out & supply the wants of the needy." The committee employed Rev. Zalmon Tobey (1792-1858), a Baptist minister, to visit each family in Warren and supply them with a Bible, if necessary, either through sale (at cost) or donation.
