Barbara Villiers was the mistress of Charles II of England, who fathered five of her children, including Anne Fitzroy who is the subject of this lettter. Anne had married Thomas Lennard, Earl of Sussex on Aug. 11, 1674 when she was only 13 years old. Villiers was created Duchess of Cleveland by Charles II.
