Sherwood Berg was born in 1919 in Hendrum, Minnesota. He earned his PhD in agricultural Economics at the University of Minnesota, and served as agricultural attaché for the US State Department Europe during the post –war period. In July 1957, Berg accepted the position of Professor and Head, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Minnesota. He held this position until June 1963. During his tenure as department head, Berg was appointed by Lyndon Johnson to chair the National Advisory Commission on Food and Fiber from 1965 to 1967. He resigned as the dean of the Institute in 1973, embarking on a two year assignment as director of the Indonesia Project, a MUCIA (Midwest Universities Consortium for International Affairs) initiative to develop an institute of agriculture in Jogjackarta, Indonesia. Upon his return in 1975, Berg was named president of South Dakota State University. Berg retired as South Dakota State University president in 1984.
