Biographical History
Mary Matteson Wilbur (1872-1957) was born in Seville, Ohio. She grew up with one sister, Ida, and five brothers: Charles Freemont, Claude Lorraine, Clifford Virgil, Halsey Hulburt "Burt," and David Maydole "Dick." In 1901, Mary and Hollis Adelbert Wilbur were married in Seville, Ohio. The Wilburs lived in Japan, China, and Korea while Hollis was a YMCA secretary for forty years. Mary and Hollis had five children, three of whom lived to adulthood: Elizabeth, C. (Clarence) Martin, and Halsey; Hollis Jr. lived 7 months and Rosemary lived three weeks. Mary was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution while in Shanghai and Korea, and also wrote mostly unpublished short stories and novels. Her keen interest in studying Chinese art and language was evident in her articles and lectures to women's groups abroad and in the United States.
