Biographical History
Originally intended for the use of medical students of the University of Southern California, the Barlow Medical Library Association was founded in 1907 after the Barlow Medical Library Building was completed. Funding for the library was given by Dr. Walter Jarvis Barlow, a faculty member of the College of Medicine, and the initial holdings consisted of volumes donated in 1897 by Dr. Wilbur A. Hendryx, material donated by Dr. Milbank Johnson in 1900 and the materials given to the library from doctors in Southern California. In 1909, the University of Southern California found the medical school too expensive to keep and deeded it, along with the library, to the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1932, the library association transferred the collection to the Los Angeles County Medical Association and the transfer was completed in 1934.
