Biographical History

John Berlinger Breaux was born in Crowley, La., on March 1, 1944, to Ezra Breaux and Katie Berlinger Breaux. He received a B.A. degree in political science from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette (1964) and a J.D. degree from the Louisiana State University Law School in Baton Rouge (1967). Breaux practiced law with the firm of Brown, McKernan, Ingram, and Breaux before becoming assistant to U.S. Representative Edwin W. Edwards between 1968 and 1972. Upon Edwards' resignation to become governor, Breaux was elected as a Democrat to fill the vacancy in a special election held September 30, 1972. He served as U.S. Representative for the Seventh Congressional District of Louisiana (1972-1987) and as a U.S. Senator for Louisiana (1987-2005). Breaux was widely considered a moderate with particular interests in environmental, commercial, and technological issues. His most noted legislative achievements came in the areas of wetlands conservation and Medicare reform.

John Breaux, a Democrat, U.S. representative (1972-1986), and U.S. senator (elected in 1986) from Louisiana, graduated from Louisiana State University Law School in 1967. He met Gillis Long in the late 1960s, when Long was running for governor and Breaux was working for Edwin Edwards. Gillis Long (1923-1985) was representative for the 8th U.S. Congressional District of Louisiana in 1963-1965 and 1973-1985. He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Louisiana in 1964 and 1971.
