Biographical History
American army officer.
Born in Greenfield, Mass., Charles Pomeroy Stone graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and served in the Mexican-American War under General Winfield Scott. During the U.S. Civil War he commanded a brigade in General Robert Patterson's Army of the Shenandoah in the First Bull Run campaign. After a portion of his command was defeated in the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Stone was incarcerated for 189 days at Fort Lafayette and Fort Hamilton under suspicion of disloyalty and treason. Following his release Stone was ordered to the Department of the Gulf, where he served as a member of the surrender commission at Port Hudson and in the Red River Campaign as General Nathaniel P. Banks's chief of staff. After the war he served for 13 years as chief of staff and general aide-de-camp for the Khedive Isma'il Pasha in the Egyptian Army. Stone's first wife was Maria Clary, who died shortly after Stone's release from Fort Hamilton. While serving in New Orleans, La., in 1863, Stone married a distant relation, Jeanne Stone.
