Biographical History
John T. Wood, architect and archaeologist, built railroad stations between Smyrna and Aidin and Smyrna and Cassaba on the the Ottoman Railroad from 1858-1862. After the completion of this project, Wood spent eleven years making excavations at Ephesus (1863-1874) and discovered the site of the temple of Diana (1869). All the remains of the temple were acquired by the British Museum. Wood wrote, "Discoveries at Ephesus" chronicling his work. Horace Parker Chandler (1842-1915), prominent Bostonian, publisher and writer ("Lover's Year-Book of Poetry") was a proprietor of the Boston Athenaeum.
