Biographical History

Baynton, Wharton and Morgan, a trading company from Philadelphia, began operating the store at Fort Pitt in 1760. The store provided clothing, rum, ammunition, building supplies and gun powder to settlers, militia and Indians. It also served as a warehouse for supplies sold in the Illinois country by George Croghan.
