Biographical History

Dean and Professor, Electrical Engineering, Iowa State University, 1949-1977. George R. Town graduated from Troy Conference Academy, Poultney, Vermont in 1922. From 1922-1929 he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, where he received an electrical engineering degree in 1926 and a Doctor of Engineering degree in 1929. He worked for the Arma Engineer Company in 1933, was an instructor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1933-1936, and manager of engineering and research at Stromberg-Carlson Company, 1936-1949. At Stromberg, Town also worked as engineer-in-charge, television lab, and as assistant director of research. On September 1, 1949 Town became associate director of the Engineering Experiment Station and professor of electrical engineering at Iowa State University. He served as dean of the College of Engineering, 1959-1977.

George Town was actively involved in numerous professional societies. Among these are: American Society for Engineering Education; National Society of Professional Engineers; Tau Beta Pi (engineering honorary society); Eta Kappa Pi (electrical engineering honorary society); Sigma Xi (research honorary society); and Phi Kappa Phi (scholastic honorary society). Town served as chairman of engineering deans' group, Mid-America State University Association (MASUA), and executive director of Television Allocation Study Organization (TASO).
