Biographical History
Biographical note: Eleanor Turnbull (1875-1964) was a Baltimore Spanish scholar and translator of Spanish poetry. She translated the works of Pedro Salinas and Miguel de Unamuno, among others.
Eleanor Turnbull came from a prominent Baltimore family. She began her translation work in 1937. She studied Spanish each year at the Summer Language School at Middlebury College, Vermont. In all, Turnbull published nine books of Spanish poetry. Her work has been praised by scholars and critics for its clarity and elegance. Eleanor Turnbull died in 1964.
