Biographical History
Professor of Physical Chemistry, University of Sydney (1973-1983). Previously held various research and academic positions in the United States, France and Brazil.
Dr. Walter J. Moore was a Professor of Chemistry at Indiana University from 1952 to 1973 when he left to teach at the University of Sydney in Australia. He was born March 25, 1918 in New York City, and his parents were Walter John Moore, Sr. and Ruth Hart Moore. He graduated from New York University with a BSc in 1937 and earned a PhD in 1940 from Princeton University. He married Patricia Bacon on November 5, 1943, with whom he had two children - Anthony and Julia. He also taught Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology, Catholic University, the University of Bristol and the University of Sydney. He also was a Research Supervisor on the Manhattan Project of the U.S. Army Engineers, 1942-1946. A prolific writer, he published more than 200 scientific research papers in addition to his Physical Chemistry which was translated into 9 languages and served as the standard of the field for more than 30 years. In 1989, his Schrödinger: Life and Thought, a biography of physicist Erwin Schrödinger, appeared to wide acclaim. Dr. Moore passed away in December 2001 in Bloomington, Indiana.
