Butterfield, Alexander Porter, 1926-

Alexander Porter Butterfield (b. 1926) was an officer in the U.S. Air Force, advancing through the ranks to colonel. He served as military assistant to the special assistant to the Secretary of Defense, 1965 to 1966, and retired from the Air Force in 1969. He was Deputy Assistant to President Nixon from 1969 to 1973, on the staff of H.R. Haldeman. In the White House, he was the chief administrative officer, coordinating or supervising numerous White House operations. He had oversight responsibility for the installation and operation of the White House taping system. After leaving the White House in 1973, he was an administrator at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), from 1973 to 1975.
