Biographical History
The Law Enforcement Academy and Board were created by the Law Enforcement Training Act of 1969 (1969 NM Laws, Chp. 264, Sec. 1-10). In 1977 the Academy was abolished and its function was transferred to the Training and Education Bureau of the Criminal Support Division of the newly established Criminal Justice Department (1977 NM Laws, Chp. 257, Sec. 51). The Academy and Board were re-established in 1979 as independent governmental entities (1979 NM Laws, Chp. 202, sec. 42-48). In 1987 the Academy was placed in the Training Division of the newly established Department of Public Safety and the Board was administratively attached to that Department (1987 NM Laws, Chp. 254, Sec. 7). The Academy was created to provide a planned program of basic law enforcement training, in-service law enforcement training for police officers, and to furnish instruction and seminars to upgrade law enforcement within the state.
The Law Enforcement Academy was originally established in 1969 (1969 NM Laws, Chp. 264, Sec. 1-10). For a complete history see OCLC record #38560608.
