Biographical History

The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines has merged two disciplines which have always been administered seperately. The School of Mines was formed as part of the original structure of the school when it was founded as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines in 1917. According to an organizational chart from 1959, the Division of Engineering functioned as part of the School of Professional Studies and was composed of departments for Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. In 1962, the College of Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering was formed as well as the College of Earth Sciences and Mineral Industry. In 1977, the School of Engineering was formed as its own administrative unit and in 1985, the School of Mineral Engineering superceded the College of Earth Sciences and Mineral Industry. In 1994, the College of Natural Sciences was merged with Engineering and in 1996, the Board of Regents again absorbed the Department of Mathematics with the two disciplines when they established the College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. In 2004, these fields were again rearranged when the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Engineering and Mines were formed.
