Biographical History
Emily James Smith was appointed the first Dean of Barnard College in 1894. She served in that role until 1900. She was a Trustee from 1901-1905. She taught history at Barnard from 1914-1929. Her marriage to George Haven Putnam in 1899 established her as a role model for women who combined careers and marriage. Under Mrs. Putnam's administration the agreement between Columbia and Barnard was renegotiated, giving Barnard a seat on the University Council and naming the President of Columbia to Barnard's Board of Trustees as well as becoming President of the College. She graduated with the first class of Bryn Mawr and studied at Girton College, Cambridge and the University of Chicago. Her study of women's history "The Lady: Studies of Certain Significant Phases of Her History" was reprinted in 1970.
