Biographical History
Allie Corbin Hixson was born May 28, 1924 to Emma Triplett and Alfred B. Corbin of Columbia, Kentucky. She earned a B.A. in English at Oklahoma A & M College in 1949 and an M.A. in Humanities at the University of Louisville in 1961. She also earned a Ph. D. in English at the University of Louisville. Hixson was a teacher in both high schools and colleges in Oklahoma, Indiana, and Kentucky. In the 1970's, she retired from her teaching career to devote time toward the support of the Equal Rights Amendment and became a leading figure in the feminist movement in Kentucky and the nation. She co-organized the Kentucky Pro E.R.A. Alliance, was elected to chair the Kentucky International Women's Year Coordinating Committee, led the Kentucky delegation to the First National Women's Conference and served as a vice-chair of the conference, and became involved with the American Association of University Women. Throughout the 1980's and 1990's she continued involvement in a variety of organizations including the National Women's Conference Committee, Kentucky Educational Television Advisory committees, E.R.A. Task Force, and National Women's Caucus. Hixson also co-authored the "ERA Facts and Action Guide" with Riane Eisler and organized the ERA Summit.
Allie Corbin was born in 1924 in southern Kentucky. At the age of 18, she came to Louisville, where she met and married Bill Hixson. She received a PhD in English from the University of Louisville in 1969. At the age of 51, Allie Hixson's life took a new direction, as she became involved in the national women's movement. Dedicated to women's issues, she became one of the most prominent feminist leaders in Kentucky and an important leader in the national Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) movement. Hixson served as a co-organizer of the Kentucky Pro-ERA Alliance and the Kentucky Women's Agenda Coalition, was elected chair of the Kentucky International Woman's Year in 1977, spoke at the national ERA rally, and worked closely with Lt. Governor Thelma Stovall. Hixson's picture hangs in the rotunda of the Kentucky capitol as a "notable Kentucky woman." She passed away on October 30, 2007.
