Biographical History
Currently an interior designer, Kaja Gam (born 1952) has had a varied career as a choreographer, performance artist, filmmaker, and the artistic director of the Awkward Dance Company, as well as a founding member of another company, the School of Hard Knocks.
Born in Denmark, Gam moved to New York in 1980, and soon after formed the Awkward Dance Company. By 1984, she had joined the performing collaborative, The School of Hard Knocks, under the direction of Yoshiko Chum. Gam established her own New York metropolitan area home restoration and interior design company, Kaja Gam Design, in 1993.
Kaja Gam, performance artist, actor, choreographer, film maker and interior designer, was born in Denmark in 1952. She moved to New York in 1980, and soon after formed the Awkward Dance Company. In 1982, she joined with Nelson Zayas, Brian Moran, Gayle Tufts, Donald Fleming and Yoshiko Chuma in founding The School of Hard Knocks. She has a M.A. in choreography and experimental theater from New York University, a B.S. in film from Copenhagen University, and a B.S. in applied anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. Her myriad careers were the building blocks upon which she has constructed her present company Kaja Gam Design.
