Biographical History
Walter K. Fisher (1878-1953) was born on February 1, 1878, in Ossining, New York. He was both a biologist and an artist. He attended Stanford University and studied zoology. When he worked for the U.S. Biological Survey he decided to specialize in echinoderms, which include starfishes and sea-urchins. He published "Starfishes of the Hawaiian Islands" in 1906. He was the curator of the California Academy of Sciences from 1916-1932. He became Resident Director of a laboratory in China Point and retired in 1943. After retirement, he continued his field work, but mostly took time for painting and drawing still life. He died on November 2, 1953.
Walter K. Fisher was educated at Stanford University, earning 3 degrees in zoology: A.B. 1901, A.M. 1903, and Ph.D. 1906. He joined the Stanford faculty in 1902 as assistant in zoology, becoming an instructor in 1907, assistant professor in 1909, and professor of biology in 1925. He was Director of the Hopkins Marine Station from 1917 until his retirement in 1943. Although he specialized in invertebrates, he was also known for his work in ornithology.
