John William Augustine Sanford, Jr., was born 1825 Nov. 3 in Milledgeville, Ga., and died 1913 Aug. 7 in Montgomery, Ala. He was the son of Marianne Ridley (Blount) and John William Augustine Sanford, Sr., a Ga. legislator, Creek land agent, and later Confederate soldier.
Sanford, Jr. received his B.A. from Oglethorpe University 1844 Nov. 13, his B.L. from Harvard University 1851 July, and his L.L.D. from the University of Ala. in 1878 July. He was admitted to the bar on 1852 Oct. 19 and located his practice in Montgomery, Ala. As a lawyer he was active in the county, state, and Supreme courts of Ala. He married Sallie Maria Taylor 1860 Mar. 7 and they had one daughter Valine and one son John W. A. Sanford III, who married Minnie Smoot of Mobile and had several children.
Sanford, Jr., was a states rights Democrat who supported Breckinridge in the 1860 election and the secession of the sourthern states in 1861. He served as a private and was promoted to captain, lieutenant colonel, and finally colonel in the Confederate army and saw action in East Tennessee and Virginia. After the war he was elected attorney general for the state of Ala. and also served as the clerk for the Supreme Court and attended the Ala. Constitutional Convention of 1901.
