Biographical History

Family descended from John Benson, a barrister in Thorne, Yorkshire, England, who emigrated to the United States in 1833 and Friedrich Julius Gustorf, the son of a banker in Cassel, Hesse, Germany who emigrated in 1819. Benson settled, with his wife and six children near Peoria, Ill. in 1834 and he died in 1836. His daughter, Harriet married Gustorf in 1837 and he started a general merchandise store in Peoria, but died of cholera in 1845. Their son, Freiderich married Sarah Collins, descendant of John Jones who fought in the Revolutionary War and Theophilos Eaton, the first governor of Connecticut Colony and they lived in Oak Park, Ill. There daughter, Harriet, attended the Maltby School for Girls in Brooklyn, New York, 1890-1891. Her son Fredrick became a Colonel in WWII and after the battle of Okinawa was the Acting Commander for the district that included Jamami, in the Kerama Islands, a village devasted by the battle. He became friends with many of the villagers and returned to visit in 1950.
