Biographical History

The South Carolina Yazoo Company was one of three companies organized in 1789 to purchase from Georgia a part of its Western territory. Alexander Moultrie, Isaac Huger, and William Clay Snipes were three of the company's charter members. The money in payment was refused by the Treasurer of Georgia. The three companies demanded that Georgia convey the land to them. In 1796, the South Carolina Yazoo company instituted suit in the U.S. Supreme Court against Georgia. The company lost the suit and the land.
