Biographical History

Jamesville is a small community, but Washington, the Beaufort County seat was the first city named in honour of George Washington and was previously known as the Forks of Tar River. Following evacuation by Union soldiers in 1864, the town was burned, but subsequently rebuilt. The Jamesville and Washington, N.C., Railroad and Lumber Company was one of many small companies that operated during the period of commercial expansion that followed in the wake of the Civil War
