Biographical History
Edme Mentelle was a French historian and geographer, and a member of the Royal Institute of Sciences, and of the Directoire (Commision Temporaire des Arts). Mentelle was the author of many geographical and historical works, and is known for his ATLAS NATIONALE DE FRANCE which he published from 1790 to 1811.
French geographer and historian.
After publishing Eléments de géographie in 1758, Mentelle was appointed professor of geography and history at the Ecole militaire, and following the Revolution, taught with Buache at the Ecoles centrales and the Ecole normale. He published numerous works, in many of which he sought to reveal the inherent relationships between geography and history, including Eléments de l'histoire romaine (1766), Géographie abrégée de la Grèce ancienne (1772), and Cosmographie élémentaire (1781). Although his Géographie comparée was planned as an extensive work, only the preliminary sections, and the sections (with maps) on Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Turkey were ever published.
