Biographical History

William Benjamin Kean (b. July 9, 1897, Buffalo, New York-d. March 10, 1981), Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1918 and first saw action with the 43rd and 45th Infantry in the Philippines (1921-1923). He taught military science and tactics in Hawaii, attended the Command and General Staff School, and served in the office of the chief of infantry up to 1942. During World War II, his assignments included chief of staff, 28th Infantry Division, II Corps, and First Army. Beginning in 1947 he was commanding general of 5th Division, 25th Division in the Korean War, III Corps, and Fifth Army. General Kean, a highly-decorated officer, retired in 1954.
