Biographical History
The Pennsylvania Railroad Company created Chief Engineers in each of its three operating regions in 1927 to lighten the work load of the central engineering office in Philadelphia. The Chief Engineer-Western Region was based in Chicago and had responsibility for projects west of Crestline and Columbus, Ohio. He was succeeded by a Regional Engineer-Northwestern Region with the adoption of the nine-region organization in November 1955 and by an Area Engineer-Chicago with the return to a three-region organization.
