Biographical History

Richard Albert Lewis was from Smethwick, in the English Midlands. He was born in 1915. He studied history at the University of Birmingham, earning the degrees of B.A. and Ph.D. Lewis served in the Ordnance Corps and later the Education Corps during the Second World War, ending up in India just prior to partition in 1947.

Lewis was appointed as Lecturer in History at what was then known as University College of North Wales, Bangor (Coleg Prifysgol Gogledd Cymru). Latterly he had been Reader in History, University of Wales, Bangor (Prifysgol Cymru, Bangor). He wrote Edwin Chadwick and the public health movement 1832-1854 (1952).

Richard Albert Lewis died in 2006.
