Biographical History

The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies was founded in 1912 to provide financial support for agencies providing services to the Jewish community in Pittsburgh. The United Jewish Fund, formed in 1936, supported international Jewish causes as well as local cultural and educational programs. The two organizations merged in 1955, forming the United Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. Many issues of significant interest to the Jewish community in Pittsburgh are respresented in these records. These issues include the closing of the J.M. Gusky Orphanage, the relocation and expansion of the Irene Kaufmann Center, the Jewish Home for the Aged and Montefiore Hospital, and internationally, the growth of Nazism and the extablishment of the state of Israel.
