Biographical History

First Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1967-), Colvard received a B.S. from Berea College, an M.A. from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. He was a professor and Head of the Department of Animal Science (1948-1953) and Dean of the College of Agriculture (1953-1960) at North Carolina State College. Colvard was also Superintendent of the Mountain Branch Agricultural Research Station, Waynesville, (1938-1946). He left North Carolina State University to serve as President of Mississippi State University (1960-1966).

Ashe County, N.C., native Dean Wallace Colvard (1913 - ) received a bachelor's degree from Berea College (Ky.) in 1935, a master's degree from the University of Missouri in 1938, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1950. He was an instructor and farm manager at Brevard College (N.C.) from 1935 to 1937 and the general manager and coordinator of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Mountain Experiment Stations from 1938 to 1946. He joined the North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) faculty as the head of the dairy husbandry section in 1947, and became the dean of agriculture in 1948. He remined in this position until 1960, when he left N.C. State to become the president of the University of Mississippi. He became the first chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1967. After his retirement in 1978, Colvard helped develop the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. He is the author of Mixed Emotions (1985) and coauthor of Knowledge is Power (1987) and University Research Park (1988).
