Biographical History

Farm hand, Bodyguard.

In the 1890's James began to work for Clay, the famed emancipationist and former minister to Russia. By then Clay, a still fiery but aged man was living in retirement at his estate, White Hall, near Richmond, Ky. James expressed a deep attachment and devotion to Clay despite the latter's eccentricities and violent tendencies.
