History of the 167th Inf. Regt., 4th Alabama.

Amerine, William H., 'Lest We Forget: The Record of Alabama's Own (n.p., n.p., n.d.).

Hayes, John B., Heroes Among the Brave (Loachapoka: Lee County Historical Society, 1973).

The history of the 167th may be said to begin on 1911 July 15. On that date the 4th Ala. Inf. Regt. officially became a part of the U.S. National Guard. From 1875 until 1911 the 4th Ala. Inf. Regt. had served as a militia unit.

On 1916 June 28 the regiment was called into Federal service in Mexico, where it remained until 1917 Mar. 16. On 1917 Aug. 14 the unit was designated the 167th U.S. Infantry Regiment and assigned to the 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Colonel William P. Screws commanded the regiment as it went to France. The regiment fought in Europe and served as part of the Army of Occupation. It was mustered out 1919 May 23.

The regiment was organized as the 4th Alabama Infantry 1919 July 1. It was redesignated the 167th U.S. Infantry in 1921 by special order #16.

In 1923 July the regiment was reassigned to the 31st (Dixie) Division, and it fought in the Pacific Theatre beginning in 1944. It was mustered out in 1946.

In 1951 the unit was reactivated and sent to Korea, and in 1953 the unit again served as a National Guard unit.
