Alfred Edward Chalon was an English artist, known as one of the best watercolor portrait artists of his day. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, his family settled in London where Chalon and his brother, John James, enrolled in the Royal Academy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1801-1860, and his reputation was enhanced by his outgoing personality and eye for elegant detail. He painted in watercolors and oils, specializing in small watercolor portraits and ivory miniatures, but also painting murals and historical scenes. He was the first to paint Queen Victoria after her accession, and was appointed the Queen's official watercolor artist. He and his brother had a very close relationship, and were at the center of a social group of artists.
