Seeger was born on Dec. 14, 1886 to American parents in Mexico City; graduated from Harvard University, 1908; taught music at UC Berkeley (1912-19), the Institute of Musical Arts, N.Y. (1921-33), and the New School for Social Research, N.Y. (1931-35); served as asst. director, Pan American Union (1941-53); visiting prof., Yale Univ. (1949-50) and lecturer, UCLA (1957-61); honorary president, Society of Ethnomusicology, 1972; decorated Commander al Mérito, Chile (1972); publications include An outline course in harmonic structure and musical invention (1913, with E.G. Stricklen), Harmonic structure and elementary composition (1916, with E.G. Stricklen), Studies in musicology, 1935-75 (c1977), and Studies in musicology II, 1929-1979 (c1994); he died in 1979.
