Biographical History

Involved in politics and community issues, Joseph Lee (1902-1992) served on the Boston School Committee from 1937-1941, 1953-1957, and 1959-1971. Lee was a harsh critic of urban renewal and the destruction of Boston's West End in the 1950s and 1960s. He organized and chaired the Massachusetts Committee to Further Outdoor Recreation and participated in the development of the Boston Board of Recreation. In 1937, Lee founded the Community Boat Club on the Charles River. Lee also ran unsuccessfully in several political races.
