Officer, 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.

Brigadier-General Charles Albert Whittier (1840-1908), a capitalist and lawyer, was born on August 6, 1840 in Bangor, Maine. He received an AB from Harvard in 1860 and studied law before enlisting with the 20th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. After the war he was appointed Inspector-General of the Military Divisions of the Pacific and South before returning to Boston in 1870 to practice law. Whittier was involved in the development of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, and in 1894, he financed the Boston Elevated Railway Company. Whittier served in the Spanish American War and was promoted to Brigadier-General. Whittier died on May 14, 1908.
