Biographical History
Collecting area: Materials dealing with all aspects of Jewish life.
The Jewish Theological Seminary of America moved into its new campus at 3080 Broadway in the Morningside Heights section of New York City in 1930. The complex was designed by the architectural firm Gehron and Ross, with David Levy, Associate Architect. The construction of the buildings was funded by donations from Louis Brush, Mortimer Schiff, and Israel Unterberg.
"Intergroup Activities" began at the Jewish Theological Seminary with the founding of the Institute for Religious Studies in 1938. In 1940 the Conference on Science, Philosophy and Religion was founded and subsequent programs, such as the Institute on Ethics, came into existence during the 1950s. A never-realized World Academy of Ethics was proposed during the same period. During the late 1950s Asian clerics and scholars, including a group of Iranian theologians (1958) and another of Buddhist monks (1959) visited the Seminary under the auspices of the Institute for Religious and Social Studies. These programs jointly attempted to bring clergypeople from a variety of faiths, scholars of the humanities and the sciences, and others such as artists, businesspeople, and statesmen together to discuss the questions of the day. The Seminary's intergroup activities were conceived and headed by its chancellor Dr. Louis Finkelstein.
And had their period of greatest activity during his administration (1940-1972). Jessica Feingold, who succeeded Finkelstein as director of the Institute of Religious and Social Studies, was also instrumental in the operation of the programs which together made up intergroup activities at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
