Biographical History
The University was constitutionally established as a land-grant institution in 1864, opened in Elko in 1874, and was relocated to Reno in 1885. As a land-grant school it was to teach agriculture and the mechanic arts to receive federal funds.
In 1885, the university, by act of the Nevada legislature, was removed from Elko, Nevada, to Reno. In February 1886, the first building constructed on campus was completed, and a register, stamped Nevada State University, was provided for visitors to sign. This first register covers the period March 1886-1890; a second register covers the period 1911-1916.
