Biographical History

Sir Charles Lilley (1827-1897) was an ex-soldier and lawyer known for his radical political views. Known as ?Lilley of the Valley?, Lilley was elected to represent Fortitude Valley in Queensland?s first Legislative Assembly. However, an attempt to introduce a bill for conscripted militia - thought to be at the suggestion of Governor Bowen - almost ended his political career and he narrowly missed being lynched by his constituents. Lilley was State Captain of the Spring Hill and Fortitude Valley Volunteer Rifle Corps at the time this address was presented.
