Biographical History

American abolitionist, lawyer and politician.

American statesman, born in Mercer, Pennsylvania; practiced law in Cadiz, Ohio, beginning in 1840. After some years as a stump speaker in the Harrison campaign, he was elected to Congress in 1854, where he served until 1873, with one interruption of service in 1864. From 1873-1885 he served as minister to Japan. During the trial of Lincoln's assassins, Bingham was a special judge-advocate for the prosecution. He also delivered the closing speech at the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson. Bingham wrote the first section of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, forbidding any state by law to abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.
