Biographical History
Born in Austria in 1861, the well-known opera singer Madame Schumann-Heink performed in the great opera houses of Germany, England and America. She became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1905, toured widely in this country, and was very active during World War I performing for U.S. servicemen. In later years she made numerous radio broadcasts and appeared in the 1935 movie Here's to romance. She died in Hollywood in 1936.

Austrian contralto, known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner. Following her debut in 1878, Schumann-Heink sang extensively in Europe, including performances at Bayreuth, 1896-1906, and as Klytemnestra in the premiere of Richard Strauss's Elektra in 1909. In 1898 she came to the United States, where she performed at the Metropolitan Opera and on concert tours. Schumann-Heink later settled in the United States and became an American citizen.
