Biographical History

The Smithsonian-Bredin Belgian Congo Expedition went to central Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sudan, Tanganyika, and Egypt. The expedition team was comprised of five members, including Dr. Waldo Schmitt of the US National Museum, his wife, physician-photographer, Dr. Roy L. Sexton, Sr. Edward W. Baker, with the US Department of Agriculture, and Dr. Roy L. Sexton, Jr. The expedition departed from Brussels and arrived in Leopoldville on April 8. From there, the team made stops in Stanleyville (Kisangani), Albert National Park (Virunga), Yangambi, the vicinity of Bukavu, Astrida (Butare), Entebbe, Juba, Khartoum, and Cairo. Participants studied and collected invertebrate life (including crustacea), mites and ticks, as well as the local plants and animals.
