Born in Scotland, Lawyer. Emigrated to Sydney, 1839. Prominent in legal, literary, educative and scientific matters. Mayor of Balmain, where he lived. Married Margaretta Underwood.
Lawyer, interested in literary and cultural affairs in Sydney. Among his friends were politicians W.B. Dalley and D.H. Deniehy and the poet Henry Kendall. James Mitchell was sent to Tahiti by L.M.S. but remained at Norfolk Island as merchant and trader. He was appointed Postmaster at Hobart, 1816.
