Biographical History

Jones & Laughlin Steel was established in 1853 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as a result of several interlocking partnerships between members of the Jones and Laughlin families. The partnerships consolidated in 1902 to become the Jones & Laughlin Steel Company, then the nation’s second largest producer of steel. The company incorporated in 1923 as the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation. Jones & Laughlin had major steel manufacturing works at Pittsburgh; Aliquippa, Pennsylvania; Cleveland, Ohio; and Hennepin, Illinois. In 1974, Jones & Laughlin became a wholly owned subsidiary of the LTV Corporation, although it continued to do business under its original name. Like the rest of the American steel industry, Jones & Laughlin’s fortunes declined steadily through the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984, the LTV Corporation merged with the Republic Steel Corporation . The new company, which was significantly reduced in size, was renamed LTV Steel .
