Biographical History
Biographical note: John Ivancovich was born in Yugoslavia in 1865; came to Tucson in 1884 and two years later opened a fruit store on Congress Street. Over the years, he expanded his business to retail and wholesale grocery interests until 1930 when he sold his grocery interests and became involved with real estate in downtown Tucson. He developed properties on Congress Street and worked with other merchants to build the first commercial light plant for the City. His wife, Hertha, was active in community affairs and a charter member of the Saturday Morning Music Club. They had three sons, John, Byron, and George. Byron Ivancovich, obtained a law degree, then worked with his father managing the family real estate holdings. Bryon married Jane Harrison and they participated in community activities including serving on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Historical Society. They were supported research and restoration of the San Xavier Mission and other missions of the southwest.
