Biographical History

William Schwartz spent his early career working for various Jewish social service agencies in New York. After receiving his MSSW from Columbia University School of Social Work, he began teaching social work, specializing in social group work, at Ohio State University and later at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He eventually returned to Columbia University, where he taught from 1962 to 1977 and was appointed Professor Emeritus. From 1977 until his death in 1982, he was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fordham University. In addition to his academic work, Schwartz undertook many group work consultations throughout his career, primarily for hospitals and children's service agencies.
