Carl W. Gottschalk (1922-1997), professor of medicine and physiology at the University of North Carolina, 1952-1995, studied butterflies as a young man, but was most known for his work in frostbite, general renal/kidney function, and chronic renal disease. He was also an avid collector of rare books, especially on physiology and nephrology.
