Biographical History

Jan Bułhak (1876-1950), studied photography with Hugo Erfurth in Dresden and worked as his assistant before opening his own studio in Wilno in 1912, where he specialized in photographing the architecture and monuments of Poland. He was a co-founder of the Wilno Photo Club (1927), and the Polish Photo Club (1929), and manager of the Institute of Photography at Uniwersytet Stefana Batorego (1919-1939). He wrote extensively on photography. While Bułhak's early work was firmly rooted in the romantic pictorialist tradition, his later photographs often exhibit modernist aesthetics.

From the description of Polish Wilno [graphic] : chief monuments of Polish national architecture in Wilno, once the second capital of Poland. 1921. (Getty Research Institute). WorldCat record id: 664396391
