Biographical History

John E. Buhler was born was born in Marion, Indiana in 1908. He received his DDS from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1935. Dr. Buhler was a professor at Indiana University, Temple University, and Emory University. Dr. Buhler was Dean of the Emory University School of Dentistry, as well as the Medical University Of South Carolina School of Dental Medicine. During World War II, Dr. Buhler served in the reserves of the United States Public Health Service. Dr. Buhler was the founding dean of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Buhler was instrumental in developing the faculty and curriculum of the program. He retired in 1971 due to illness. Dr. Buhler's professional affiliations include serving as the executive vice president of the Hanau Engineering Company, president of the American Association of Dental Schools, and chapter president of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental fraternity. Dr. Buhler also published more than 85 papers over the course of his career. His portrait hangs in the MUSC Macauley Museum of Dental History, and there is a scholarship fund named in his honor at MUSC. Dr. Buhler died in 1976.
